Since lower-school, teachers have been educating us about the three Rs, which stands for reduce, reuse, and recycle. It is true that our society has made advancements in the process of recycling and reusing what we discard. However, according to MRC Polymer, only 27% of plastics are recycled. Where did the rest go? I have recently learned from a video made by Angela Sun that plastics are trapped in gyres. There is a plastic island two times the size of Texas building up on the Midway Islands. This plastic won’t disappear, but they will break down to smaller pieces that store toxins. Marine animals are consuming these plastic pieces, which not only kills them, but accumulates up the food chain. Its like a ripple effect. The actions we choose will affect a lot of things that are not yet clear to us. There is a saying, “You reap what you sow.” Now, we are facing an inevitable problem, and we can’t turn our attention away anymore. The environment is affected. Living things are affected. We are affected. It is time to take action.
