Fifty Shades of Blue

Fifty Shade of Blue

What is the most important thing in you life? I’ll tell ya, it is not your girl friend, not your boyfriend, or even your family and friend, or even the erotic movie “ Fifty Shade of Gray”. Lacking these things will not kill you! Repeat, lacking these will not kill you. The things that are fundamental to life and will kill you if you don’t have them are: oxygen you breath in every single second, water you drink every single day, and food you eat every single day. As my heading foreshadow, I will be discussing water in this blog.

  • There are 7 billions people in the world, but 1 billion don’t have access to clean water.
  • 1 out of 7 people do not have clean water to drink from.
  • 1 burger = 6 gallons of water.
  • 70% of water sources are for agriculture.
  • Each day there are 4500 kid, who died because of water related disease.
  • Water related disease have killed more people than any war.

People think of water as limitless, but the dark truth is that it is not. We are using water like it will never run out. What we need to think is that there is only 3 percent of the world’s water is freshwater which we need to share with 7 billion more people who live on the same earth. One perfect way we could do to save water is by consuming less meat. As you know, most water is wasted for raising animals and agricultural use. Change from a burgers to salads, and you would save more than 5 gallons of water, and get much healthier in the process. Humans have brains to think, so think.

TRASH 2

WHEN THE OCEAN ARE STILL BLUE

Diving into the deep blue transparent ocean, laying on the hot soft sand, walking on the shore, and letting my gentle toes touches the fine grains of sand, I can’t imagine anything better. I love the ocean, and that is all I can say.

Thinking of all the trash we each put into the sea puts my heart in deep sorrow. I never know that  200 million tons of trash are both intentionally and unintentionally dumped into the ocean every single year. That it is equivalent to 75,000 piece of plastics, 6.35 billion kilogram of trash added to OUR ocean, our beautiful ocean every single year. I never knew that plastic took 500 to 1000 years to decay. I never knew. I never knew and that is all that I can say.

As people of the 21st century, do you want the people from the 31st century to blame everything you do? How what will eventually be their deep blue transparent ocean turned into a dark filthy ocean. Their hot, soft sand being turned to be a disgusting and repulsive mixture of black sand, and small particles of plastic? Do you? Knowing is not enough, doing is. THE OCEAN IS NOT AN INTERNATIONAL LANDFILL!

Ocean Pollution

Have we not learned our lesson? This is a question for all of people living on Earth. Never before in the history of the world has one species caused so much damage to the Earth. It is really a sad thing to realize this, but do we care? I don’t think so. We knew all the problems all along, yet we chose to turn our backs on these problems. We try to hide waste underground and underneath the ocean, but clearly we are just turning a blind eye to it. Nobody cares about the ocean because everybody uses it, yet none of us own it. This is the tragedy of the commons. However, we will be responsible for our own action and learn the consequences of being unsustainable.

The ocean covers 71% of Earth. It is home to various types of marine organisms, which 70% of our human race depend on for protein. We gain so much, but we care so little for the ocean. We have been putting plastic, radioactive waste, industrial waste, and agricultural waste into the it, which will eventually come back to haunt us. The amount of toxins in the ocean accumulates up the food chain, and we humans are no doubt one of the apex predators. This means we are eating the toxins that accumulate in the fish. These toxins are fat-soluble, so we can’t get rid of them. Only females can remove toxins through their milk, but this only means that our children will be filled with toxins before they grow up. Are we willing to sacrifice future generation’s lives for our satisfaction?

Eutrophication in New Orleans
The next problem is eutrophication. The fertilizers collected in the ocean from run-offs causes large bacterial bloom. These bacteria can reproduce faster than algae, which means it will compete with algae for sunlight and resources. As bacteria increases, algae will decrease. This means less food for fishes and more diseases for them. We get infected by consuming sick fish. Hell, maybe we won’t even have fish to eat anymore. We will be losing our resources one by one as we deplete the food chain. A chain will break, if one of the links is weak. When the chain does break, then it can’t be used anymore.

We need to start by realizing the consequences of our actions and learn from our mistakes. We have to act and not just talk about it. We are responsible for this problem but have no solutions. We were able to make up this mess, then we must have a way to clean it up. I would like to be known as the species that saves the planet, not the specie that brought chaos to such a beautiful planet.
