A water footprint is not only what we drink, but what you eat, what you buy and what you use. It is the amount of water we use in and around our home, school or office throughout the day. It includes the water we use directly (e.g., from a tap), plus the water that takes to produce the food we eat, the products we buy, the energy we consume and even the water we save when we recycle. Virtual water, which makes up the majority of our footprint, is the water we can not feel nor see, but the water used in the process of making the products we buy.
Believe it or not, we can do to help is eat less meat, and more vegetables to reduce the use of water. Take a look at the photos below, imagine how many liters of water are needed to provide food for everyone in the whole world. (Different source has different number of liters due to the quantity produce; however they do still have slight differences).
Have you considered being vegetarian?
Beef- 15,500 Pork- 4,800 Chicken 3,900
Rice- 2,300 Soya- 1,800 Wheat- 1,300
If we total the amount up, there is a really big difference. Check out the video below to find out what small changes can me make to our meals that would mean quite big.
